In the last 11 years, I’ve moved six times, which might sound like too many times to many people, but not to New Yorkers and inhabitants of other cities. Having said that, I feel like a moving and packing expert at this point and have come up with some tips that can be helpful for you if you are moving now or in the future.
The best packing tip is to get a U-Haul moving kit. These kits are equipped with the things you need to pack, protect, and organize your items and I highly recommend it because I have used it for my moving.
You can choose from the four options of U-Haul, your selection is based on the size of your space: it includes the Apartment Kit, 1-2 Bedroom Kit, 3-4 Bedroom Household Kit, and the 4+ Bedroom Master Pack Moving Kit.
I purchased the 1-2 bedroom kit for my most recent move in May 2023. Here’s everything that is available in the kit:
- 15 small moving boxes
- 3 large wardrobe boxes
- 25 medium moving boxes
- 10 large moving boxes
- 1 cushion foam
- 1 glass pack kit
- 1 flat-screen TV cover
- 1 sealable mattress bag (queen/king size)
- 3 boxes/packaging paper tape (55-yard roll)
- 1 packing paper (100 sheets)
- 1 dish saver kit
- 1 box of markers with a knife
- 2 15′ bubble wrap rolls
- 1 5″ mover’s stretch plastic wrap
The quantities of each item can be adjusted in your moving kit. I thought I would only need 10 medium moving boxes instead of 25 medium boxes but since I have two TVs and a lot of dishes, I got another flat-screen TV cover and an extra dish saver. I also purchase more packing paper and tape than I usually use.
If you order the 1-2 bedroom kit without any modifications, the cost will be $196.24+tax. With all the customizations, the cost of the kit was $168.15+tax, and the standard shipping was free of cost due to the $50+ order.
What to expect from U-Haul in terms of quality
Everything in the kit was in the best condition whenever I used U-Haul.
U-Haul moving boxes are well-made, sturdy, and easy to unfold and tape together, and they also give you space to write what is inside it. In addition, the boxes are also reusable and recyclable, but if you do not have enough room to store them in your apartment, you cannot use them again, I guess.
The design of the wardrobe boxes is impeccable which makes the packing of your closet an easy task. Each box comes with a metal hanging bar to hang up to 2 feet of closet space.
A friend of mine also used U-Haul Boxes while moving in the summer season.
“I’d bought a ton of large plastic bins for my move, but once I ran out of plastic bins, we purchased nine medium U-Haul boxes to get the job done. The boxes are sturdy they held plates, books, shoes, and general knick-knacks around the apartment without sagging at the bottom or breaking at the handles he added.”
They used all nine (you’d be astonished to see how much you can accumulate in a small apartment), most of the boxes are in decent shape even after moving so they saved them in the storage. They said that the boxes would be used a second time too.
What to expect for shipping times
As far as the shipping options are concerned: U-Haul gives standard (5-10 business days), priority (2-3 business days), and express shipping (1-2 business days), but only standard shipping offers free orders over $50. The other shipping can be costly as compared with Uhaul and it also depends on the shipping address.
On U-Haul’s FAQ page, the answer of the company to “How long will it take to get my moving supply order” is as follows: “Orders placed before 10:00 a.m. (CST) will be processed and shipped on the same day. Orders placed after 10:00 a.m. (CST) will be processed and shipped on the next business day. Most orders arrive in 2-4 business days.”
Whenever you move, in my opinion, you should use moving kits from U-Haul. I also give preference to standard shipping and my order was shipped the following business day and reached my door a few days later. The experience can be changed keeping in view the location.
